Can you choose the sex of your baby?

There are a lot of myths out there when it comes to baby making (sleep with a wooden spoon under your bed if you want a girl, or eat only the ends of loaves of bread if you want a boy). Here’s how to separate fact from fiction.

Medically assisted sex selection

The only truly reliable way to influence a baby’s sex is medically, through procedures such as Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS). This (very) expensive procedure guarantees a baby's sex through in vitro fertilization, but it is normally only used by couples who are trying to avoid passing on sex-specific genetic illnesses, such as hemophilia. (Medically assisted sex selection for non-medical reasons is banned in Canada because of the ethical questions surrounding sex discrimination.)
